About Legacy Construction
How We Got Started
I started swinging a hammer on job sites when I was eight years old, working alongside my dad every summer until I left for college to study construction management.
After earning my degree, I spent 15 years in the commercial construction world, working my way up from assistant project manager to overseeing developments as large as $300 million—office towers, mixed-use complexes, and institutional buildings where a single mistake could cost millions.
But I got tired of the big city grind, the politics of massive firms, and watching corners get cut in the name of shareholder returns.
I moved back to Maine on January 1st, 2021 to build the custom home construction company I'd been planning for years—one that treats every custom home like it'll be standing in 2150, not just long enough to pass the one-year warranty inspection.
To offer clients a more complete and seamless experience, I decicded to obtain my real estate license. Today, I combine deep construction knowledge with real estate expertise to help clients with land acquisition, build smarter, buy confidently,, and make informed decisions every step of the way.
What We Do
We specialize in custom home builds and high-end remodels including full-home renovations, kitchens, bathrooms, and additions for clients who want craftsmanship that lasts generations, not just decades.
Most custom homes take 10-14 months from foundation to final walkthrough, with projects typically ranging from $400,000 to $2 million+ across a 30-mile radius from Portland.
Why Work With Us
I spent 15 years managing commercial projects worth up to $300 million before returning to Maine to build residential work the right way—every project gets the same attention to detail I'd demand for my own home, and I'm on-site multiple times per week.
I bring the systems, planning processes, and quality control standards from commercial work to residential construction, which means you get the kind of project management most homeowners never experience.
We carry full licensing and insurance, provide a 5-year workmanship warranty (most builders offer one year), and I personally review every phase of construction before crews move to the next stage.
We also maintain a short project list—typically 4-6 active builds at any time—so your project gets the focus it deserves instead of competing with 20 other jobs for attention and resources.
Legacy Construction builds custom homes and handles major renovations for homeowners in the Portland area who refuse to settle for contractor-grade workmanship and weekend-warrior attention to detail.
We bring commercial-level project management, architectural precision, and generational-quality craftsmanship to every build, whether it's a spacious addition or a multi-million dollar custom home.
You get a home built to last multiple generations without the change orders, timeline creep, communication blackouts, and quality compromises that plague this industry.
Why choose Legacy Construction
Detailed Plans, Zero Surprises
Every project starts with comprehensive architectural plans and a fixed-price contract before we break ground—no "we'll figure it out as we go" approach that leads to budget overruns. We spend 4-6 weeks in planning and design so you know exactly what you're getting and what it costs. Changes cost extra, but they're rare because we solve problems on paper, not mid-construction.
Commercial-Grade Project Management for Your Maine Home
I bring 15 years of managing $100M+ commercial projects to every custom home, which means detailed schedules, proactive problem-solving, and weekly progress updates. You're never wondering what's happening or when the next crew shows up. We treat your $800,000 home with the same systems I used on projects 400 times that size.
Comprehensive Warranties on All Work
We guarantee our workmanship for five years—five times longer than Maine's standard one-year requirement—because we're building homes that'll outlast your mortgage. If something isn't right, we fix it immediately, not after you've called three times. Most builders avoid long warranties because they can't stand behind their work; we extend them because we can.
Meet the Team
Joe Hausler - Founder/Owner
I founded Legacy Construction in 2021 after 15 years managing commercial projects including a $300 million development, bringing that level of planning and execution to residential custom builds. I personally review plans and oversee critical phases on every project, ensuring the details that separate good homes from generational homes don't get missed. Grew up in Maine swinging hammers, left to get a construction management degree and big-project experience, came back to build the company I'd want to hire.
Tim Schofield - Office Manager and Accountant
Tim has been a professional carpenter for us since 2021 and brings 22 years of finish carpentry and trim work to every build. He handles all custom millwork, cabinetry installation, and interior details where precision matters most—door casings that line up perfectly, crown molding with invisible joints, stairs that don't squeak in year three. Clients consistently mention his work when they walk through completed homes because it's immediately obvious when craftsmanship is done right.
Jonathan Henshaw - Project Manager & Estimator
John joined as project foreman in 2022 after running framing crews for a decade across New England. He coordinates all trade scheduling, manages day-to-day site operations, and ensures every subcontractor meets our standards before their work gets covered up. His ability to spot potential issues two weeks before they'd become problems keeps projects moving and budgets intact—the kind of situational awareness that only comes from years running complex job sites.
